We have a sailor on our hands

Quacky Toaster and I went to McDonald's tonight for dinner. For dessert, I ordered two vanilla cones. I don't know WHAT it is about Kate and saying crazy things when she sees ice cream (maybe it's because we only give it to her like twice a month except at Nana's), but when the McDonald's lady handed her the cone, Kate excitedly blurted out "Oh Sh*t!! Ice cream!!" Of course her pronunciation was very clear and there was a very long line behind us so many a small child and appalled parent overheard. Lovely.

Kate Renamed Herself

My daughter has decided today that "Kate Mackenzie Garland" is no longer a suitable name. She would much prefer to go by "Quacky Toaster" so please make the necessary adjustments. If you try to call her Kate, she will say "Nope. I Quacky Toaster now."

Flu Shot Time Again

  • Oct 14, 2008

This afternoon Kate and I went to get our Thimerosal-free flu vaccines at our family doctor's office. Kate has to get another dose in four weeks, poor thing! Anyway, I was talking to her all day about how we were going to head to the doctor after nap time to get a shot that would help keep us healthy. She asked, "Like a vitmin?" (vitamin) and I said "Yes! Exactly."

Kate watched me get my shots first (two pedi ones so I could avoid the Thimerosal too) and didn't seem anxious at all. The sweet nurse cleaned off Kate's thigh and quickly gave her the vaccination. Kate's eyes nearly bugged out of her head and she firmly shouted at the nurse "DON'T LADY!! That too sharp." She then had the silent cry (if you have a kid, you know what I'm talking about) for about 30 seconds as she worked herself up to hysterics. Just when I calmed Kate down enough to speak, she glared at the nurse and asked her seriously "Why do that lady? Katie have boo boo now." Kate gave her the evil eye on the way out.

As I was checking out, I asked the receptionist if Kate could have a couple stickers. Kate let me put them on her shirt and then puffed out her bottom lip and told the receptionist that she needed a red lollipop too. With her band-aid, Dora stickers, and lollipop in tow, I carried her out to the car. After we (Kate likes to help) buckled her in, Kate looked at me with big puppy-dog eyes and sighed "Katie so brave." My sweet girl :)

Kate is a Jokester

Brad's been out of town the last few days so the other night before bed time Kate and I took a trip to the mall to ride the carousel. We went to Olive Garden for dinner and Kate was really great and not at all antsy (I was surprised too). Since we weren't getting the evil eye from waiters or patrons, I told her we could share a dessert. Kate chose chocolate gelato since there was a big picture on the menu. When the waiter brought out the largest serving of ice cream I have ever seen, she blurted out a seriously enthusiastic "Heeeeey now!!" The waiter and I about died laughing. As soon as I heard Kate say it, I knew just where she got it from. Brad Garwhen (as she says)! Here's a picture of the praise worthy dessert:

A Couple of Nursing Wraps

I found this Hooter Hider tutorial online (how great is that name?) and made three today. I have two girlfriends who are expecting and planning to breastfeed and I made one for myself. I like this pattern especially because of the boning which allows you to see the baby and makes the cover more breathable. Anyway, here they are. Mine is the one with pink polka dots since I'm having the only girl.

Oktoberfest

Brad and I took Kate to downtown McKinney this morning to enjoy Oktoberfest (okay, and so I could run into the quilt store). We had so much fun walking around and there was a ton for Kate to do. She won a gold piggy (named Giggy), captured a green balloon, saw lots of puppy dogs (a favorite thing to spy), and bounced (see picture below). It's mornings like these when all three of us just get to relax and spend time together that I want to bottle up and save for later to remember.

Kate's getting so big, so fast. Just when I think there is absolutely, positively, no feasible way that I could love this little bundle more than I already do, I wake up the next morning and sure as the sun shines, my love and admiration for Kate soars. I just don't understand how that happens again and again!!

The result of Kate's first night in her big girl room .... tbd!

Brad and I decided that we had better move Kate over to her princess room now instead of waiting until the baby was almost here because we don't want Kate to feel ousted. Tonight is officially night numero uno sans crib. We've been talking to Kate for at least a month about how much fun it will be to sleep in her princess room and she seemed pretty excited about it. This afternoon she migrated all (and I mean ALL) of her stuffed animal friends from her crib to her new bed. We brought over the blanket she always sleeps with and her pillow, hoping that would make the transition easier.

Brad and I read her stories, sang her songs, and reassured her that she would have a fun and safe (Kate's big on "safe") night's sleep. Brad snuck out the door first and as I was crawling out of Kate's bed, she looked at me with panicked eyes and screamed "Mommy, Kate no want princess room. Cribby room please. Cribby please. No princess room." It took everything in me not to say "Okay, you're right. Let's go back to the crib!" I resisted, gave her a big kiss and told her we would play first thing in the morning after she told me all about her night. She hollered as I closed the door and I thought to myself we're going to have big problems tonight. Brad and I were talking in the hallway and she stopped crying within 30 seconds and I haven't heard a peep since (17 minutes and counting). Please, please, please let my sweet baby sleep well tonight!!!!
